Feeling creative, or on a budget? You can now buy our wooden wall letters unpainted. Priced from £2.10, they’re available in a range of our most popular fonts, and four sizes.
A few tips for painting your wooden letters:
Apply a primer coat – there are specialist mdf primers available, but any wood primer will do. Let it dry thoroughly, and then give it a light sand, especially on the edges of the letters….mdf will fur up on the cut edges when you apply paint, so a light sanding (known in the trade as ‘de-nibbing’) is recommended to get a good finish. Don’t want to have to buy primer specially for painting your letters? Some of our customers have reported getting good results using just a coat of white emulsion paint as a primer coat. Our advice would be to make sure it’s dry, and sand it well.
Now you’re ready to paint! We’re often asked what the best type of paint is – there’s no right answer to this, as you can paint primed mdf with almost any type of paint – acrylics, water based, spray paints, metallics, craft paints, even good old wall paint. It’s important though to build up light coats, and of you want really good results, give a light sand with fine sandpaper between coats.
Finally you might want to seal your letters with a coat of clear varnish.
